Tooting my own goddamn horn. June 11, 2007

As many of you probably know, working in customer service is a thankless task in a depressing industry that mostly only serves to remind you to be polite to others working in customer service because they hate their jobs as much as you do, and to push you into getting a job that forces more responsibility upon you but that (mostly) relieves you of dealing with morons all day (actually, some days that’s pretty debatable).

That being said, there are some perks to working in customer service. One of those perks is, strangely enough, being mentioned (however inaccurately or vaguely) in local free papers (i.e., Toronto’s NOW, Hamilton’s VIEW). The NOW piece is old. I’m not trying to ride someone else’s hotness. Also, I should note that I probably should’ve been working at the Beguiling, not the Silver Snail.
Check it out:

This is when the endorsement deals start rolling in, right?

    Les.

As a (apprently official) Hot Girl That Reads Comics, I would like to seek your advice. Since you don’t work at The Beguiling, I assume you’ll make me feel bad about my questions, but I guess that’s a risk I’m willing to take.

Other than that book you recommended to me last year (two years ago?) I haven’t read any comics really since I was a kid. UNTIL NOW! Recently I read Ghost World, V for Vendetta, Batman: Year 100, the Wolverine Origin book, and I’ve been reading the new Buffy comics. Also, I bought Marvel Zombies, but haven’t read it yet. Can you please recommend some other fun things I can pick up? Preferably before Thursday. Thanks.

Les, good for you for tootin you’re own horn, I like that! I feel like people are tootin enough! Pun intended!
    Hah!

    Lates! ! ! !

  3. caryl,

A good fart joke never goes out of style, and you just proved that.

    Dave,

Thank you for asking the best question ever. Kudos to you, my friend. Also, congrats on reading Year 100. I thought it was great, but others disagreed. Also, Paul Pope came and did a signing at the store and I think that I actually swooned (i.e., he’s super good-looking).

This is tough to answer because I’m not sure if you’re looking for superhero stuff or not. From your list above, I’d say you’re open to both, so I’ll suggest some non-superhero AND superhero stuff:

    Batman: Year One
    Batman: The Killing Joke
Batman: The Long Hallowe’en/Dark Victory/Haunted Knight (all the same series, sort of…You should read them together)
    Batman: Dark Knight Returns/Strikes Again
    Superman: Red Son
    Fables
    Ex Machina
    Y the Last Man
    Swamp Thing (Alan Moore story)
    Sandman
    From Hell
    Watchmen
    DMZ
    WE3
    Maus
    Eightball
    Optic Nerve/anything by adrian tomine
    Blankets
    Demo
    Scott Pilgram (Vols.1-3)
    anything by Jeffrey Brown

There are a lot more I want to suggest too, but this seems like a good list to start with, no?

Let me know how it goes!

thanks les. i truly appreciate your help. i’m hoping to hit up the store tomorrow, so hopefully i can pick some of this shit up. also, when i’m in toronto, i will come see you and get more recommendations IN PERSON.

i can see how people wouldn’t like Year 100. i thought it was cool, but i wish it was longer. i felt like he did a good job setting up the world/characters and starting to tell the story, but i was left wanting more. i guess that’s a good thing, though, right?
